Abstract
Textile or like materials are heated, prior to passing them through a molten metal bath, to a temperature above the freezing-point of the metal bath. Preferably the heated textile materials are passed through a layer of treating liquor floating on the surface of the molten metal, or they may be impregnated with a treating liquor and then passed through a treating liquor floating on the molten metal. When the treating liquor contains a hydrosulphite, an anti-oxidant such as glucose, benzaldehyde or tannic acid is added to inhibit the formation of sludge on the molten metal. The cloth may be heated by passing over steamheated cylinders, by passing through a casing through which hot air is blown or by passing between electrically-heated radiant surfaces. The cloth on leaving the metal bath may similarly pass through a column of treating liquid floating on the surface of the metal as described, for example, in Specification 661,086. Specifications 620,584 and 663,066 also are referred to.
