Abstract

Asbestos cement sheets, tiles, &c. are, while in the moist state, surface treated with zinc, calcium, or magnesium oxide, or an insoluble salt of these metals, and with soap solution which by means of hot irons, produces a glaze. It is then treated with an alkaline silicate solution, dried, and stoved at least at 300 DEG F. Further treatment by dipping in a bath of molten wax, resin, &c. may be given. Fillers and pigments may be admixed with the zinc &c. compounds, and the soap solution may also be admixed with a proportion of zinc &c. compounds before application.
