Abstract

678,481. Rotary internal-combustion engines. FAIRBAIRN, G. A. July 4, 1950 [Aug. 3, 1949], No. 16706/50. Class 110(ii) The engine comprises charging and power cylinders 22, 22<SP>1</SP>, rotary discs 21, 21<SP>1</SP> carrying pistons 26 which move around the cylinders and co-act with gaps 53, 54 in abutment discs 44, 45 which are driven by gearing 50, 49 from the main shaft 16. The discs 21, 21<SP>1</SP> have arcuate ports 42, 42<SP>1</SP> which control the flow of gas from the cylinder 22 to the spherical combustion chamber 27, via ports 35, 36 (see Fig. 11), and from the chamber 27 to the cylinder 22<SP>1</SP> via ports 37, 38. An annular flange 24 extends axially from each disc 21, 21<SP>1</SP> and is sealed by packing rings 25. A further flange 58, on each disc co-acts with a packing ring 59. Packing 40 is also provided. A cover plate 34 is removed to allow access to the chamber 27 and plug 32. The cylinders are provided with cooling fins, or water jackets may be provided. The number of combustion chambers and pistons may be increased.
