Abstract
673,126. Book-binding covers. BIRCH, F. G.,. and COOK, J. E. April 21, 1950 [Nov. 18, 1949], No. 29557/49. Class 16. A method of rebinding books consists in covering a loose jacket 1 with a sheet of transparent material 2 which is preheated with an adhesive on one side attaching strips 3 to the upper and lower edges which in conjunction with the end flaps of the jacket are turned in to overlap the edges of cover boards 4, 5 and securing the boards and a spine strip 6 to the inner surface of the loose jacket so that in rebinding, the loose jacket becomes a permanent cover proper. The transparent material 2, is of the kind which is non-cracking, does not contract in use and is non-inflammable, for example, polythene,' and according to the Provisional Specification may be similar to that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane," but preheated with an adhesive on one side which becomes tacky under pressure. Where an original loose jacket is not available, a paper jacket may be prepared which includes the in-turning portions and the invention is applicable to the manufacture of new book covers in the first instance. The bound book may have a line of stitching in accordance with Specification 523,502.
