Abstract
672,488. Batteries. WILLARD STORAGE BATTERY CO. June 23, 1950 [Oct. 20, 1949], No. 15712/50. Class 53. A storage battery is provided with a filling device comprising a boss 11 projecting from the cover 10 and terminating below in a tube 14 reaching to the required level of the electrolyte. Gas can escape from the battery through openings 16, 17. The boss 11 is provided with a pivoted spherical or cylindrical closure member 20 which is formed with a channel 23 leading into a cut-away portion or channel 22. In the position shown in Fig. 4 the tube 14 is closed by the solid part of the member 20 while the opening 17 communicates with the atmosphere through the channel 23. When electrolyte is to be introduced into the battery the member 20 is rotated to bring the channel 22 into alignment with the tube 14, the opening 17 then being closed by the solid part of member 20. Opening 16 may be provided with a baffle 18.
