A mounting for a chair comprises a subframe c adapted to rest on the floor, a segmental bearer or bearers b on the chair frame a and complementary arcuate recesses d in the subframe c such bearers forming with the recesses d a transverse axis for tilting movement substantially below the normal centre of weight distribution whereby friction between the bearers b and recesses d provides setting for the tilt angle of the chair adjustable at will by the occupant by change of weight distribution. Castors e are provided on the sub-frame c which is also connected at the front to the chair frame by counterbalancing tension springs and to urge the seat to its normal position. A stop is provided on the chair frame to prevent forward tilting of the chair on the sub-frame.
