661,543. Supercharging. COOK, C A: (Soc. Nationale d'Etude et de Construction de Moteurs d'Aviation.) Nov. 15, 1949. No. 29243/49. Class 7(ii) In a supercharging device for aircraft piston engines a low-pressure compressor stage 2 driven by an exhaust gas turbine 4 is in series with a high-pressure com- _ pressor stage 3 which, at low altitudes, is driven by the engine 1, through disconnectible driving coupling means 5 and, at high altitudes, is rendered independent of the engine by disconnectible driving coupling means 6 between the stages when, owing to an. increase in the expansion rate of the turbine, the speed of stage 2 increases and reaches that of stage 3. the two stages then being driven by the turbine. The means 5 6 may comprise appropriately directed free-wheel devices.
