244,032. Curtis Gas Engine Corporation, (Assignees of Curtis, C. G., and Newton, E. R.). Dec. 2, 1924, [Convention date]. Pumps; two-stroke engines.-The air for scavenging and charging the cylinders e of a two-stroke-cycle engine is delivered by two compressors C, C<2> in series; the multi-stage, centrifugal compressor C<1> is driven by a turbine T, actuated by the exhaust from the engine, this exhaust being at a pressure substantially above atmospheric. The compressor C<2> is driven by the engine and consists of a two-cylinder doubleacting piston-pump; a cooler K is used between the two compressors. The pressure of the exhaust from the engine and thereby the pressure of the air in the air receiver R is regulated by varying the number of nozzles in use in the turbine. At starting, the piston pump only need be used the exhaust passing direct to atmosphere through the valve 35. Steam generated from the water jackets can be expanded in the turbine. With two or more internal combustion engines, and as ir. a twin screw ship, a piston compressor may be on each shaft these compressors delivering to a common air receiver; the engine exhaust may be used in one turbine only. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 8886/06.
