Abstract
661,268. Hose couplings. MILLAR, J. H., and AVIATION CORPORATES, Ltd. July 14, 1948 [Aug. 5, 1947]. No. 21209/47. Class 99 (i). In a coupling in which a reinforced hose is gripped between an outer sleeve 10 and a metallic insert 19, the reinforcement 2 is bared at one end both on the inside and the outside and directly gripped between the sleeve 10 and a rigid supporting member 5 which is arranged annularly around the insert and between the insert and the inside of the bared reinforcement. The sleeve 10 and member 5 are preferably of steel, brass, aluminium alloy or phosphor bronze. Part of the inner lining 3 is first removed and the braid soldered to prevent it from fraying whereupon the member 5 is positioned and the outer lining 1 removed to accommodate the sleeve 10. The sleeve 10 has a flange 15, a flared mouth 11, an external groove 14 and teeth 12, 13 on either side of an internal groove 18. The head of the sleeve 10 is next compressed onto the braid 2 and the insert 19, which has a union nut 20 and a packing ring 26 positioned thereon and teeth 23, is inserted into the hose and expanded therein. Finally, the skirt portion of the sleeve 10 is contracted and the packing ring 26, which aligns a groove 24 in the insert with a locking ridge 7 in the member 5, removed. In a modification the outside lining is first removed and the braid encircled at its end by a split ring which is accommodated in a recess in the flanged end of the sleeve 10.
