Abstract
574,797. Pipe joints. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and BROCK, W. H. J. June 13, 1944. No. 11316. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] An annular insert 20 is secured within the enlarged bore 17 of a pipe coupling member 11 by forming it with an cutwardly directed dished flange 22 which is flattened by axial pressure on the insert to expand the flange into gripping engagement with the bore 17. The insert has a tapered portion 21 which is engaged by the flared mouth of the coupling member 10 which screws into the member 11, or it may be engaged by a flared pipe end compressed thereon by an externally screw-threaded coupling nut. The insert may be internally tapered so as to be engaged by an externally tapered spigot on the coupling member 10. The flange may be separated from the insert by a V-groove 26, and may be separately attached to the insert. The surface 23 of the insert may have a slight annular projection. In a joint of the kind described in Specification 561,711 in which a sealing ring 33, Fig. 9 is secured around the pipe 31 by deformation'of a dished flange 35, an insert 20 having a dished flange 22 for securing it in the coupling member 11 provides a radial surface 38 against which the flange 35 is deformed.
