Abstract
657,896. Hand wheels. GILBERT, E. M. Aug. 17, 1949, No. 19303/48. [Class 80(iv)] The rim 2 of a steering wheel is provided with a wooden, metallic or plastic knob 10 which is rotatable on a bolt 7 clamped to the rim. The bolt 7 passes through a sleeve 8 abutting a saddle 3 and engages a nut 4 riveted to a metal band 1 which is passed around the rim 2 to engage a hook 6 on the nut. The sleeve 8 may be replaced by a shoulder on the bolt. The bore of the knob may be bushed or provided with ball bearings, and in order that its top surface may be continuous the knob may be retained on the bolt 7 by a set screw engaging a groove therein. Two diametrically opposed knobs may be provided on the rim or spokes of a steering wheel or on a steering arm replacing the wheel.
