Abstract

Vulcanized synthetic rubbers, such as those known under the names of "Buna" S and "Buna" A ("Buna" being a Registered Trade Mark) are reclaimed by heating in the presence of tertiary lauryl mercaptan. The process may be carried out at a temperature of 300-500 DEG F., preferably using the extrusion apparatus of Specification 657,614. In examples, the rubber is treated with tertiary lauryl mercaptan together with aromatic petroleum solvents, petroleum resin, engine oil, lecithin, water, tertiary butyl catechol, ethyl butyric acid and/or Naftolen 100. Specifications 610,812 and 610,901, [both in Group V], are referred to.ALSO:Vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber is reclaimed by heating the rubber in the presence of tertiary lauryl mercaptan. The synthetic rubbers may be those known under the names "Buna" S, and "Buna" A, ("Buna" being a Registered Trade Mark). The process may be carried out at a temperature of 300-500 DEG F., preferably using the extrusion apparatus of Specification 657,614. In examples the rubber is treated with tertiary lauryl mercaptan together with substances chosen from aromatic petroleum solvents, petroleum resin, engine oil, lecithin, water, tertiary butyl catechol, ethyl butyric acid and naftolen 100. Specifications 610,812 and 610,901 are referred to.
