Abstract
Vulcanizable synthetic rubber is produced by the polymerization of a mixture of unsaturated hydrocarbons, such as isoprene, butadiene, piperylene or 1 : 3 - dimethylbutadiene, with acrolein-methylamine, CH2 = CH - CH = N - CH3, or its homologues, prepared by condensing an alkyl- or aryl-amine with aerolein. One part of the amino derivative polymerized with seven parts of the hydrocarbon gives a rubber which can readily be vulcanized. Condensation may be promoted by high pressure, by addition or fixed alkalies or ammonia, by ultra-violet radiation or high-frequency electric oscillations in presence of a neutral solvent, or by blood charcoal. The acrolein amino compound may be added to partly polymerized butadienes and condensation continued. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) increase in the proportion of the amine derivative causes the product to acquire the properties of vulcanized rubber. Thus, with equal parts of the hydrocarbon and the amine derivative, a product resembling rubber and leather is obtained; whilst with seven parts of the amine derivative to one part of the hydrocarbon, an ebonite-like substance is produced. In addition, the vulcanization of natural rubber can be accelerated by the addition of the acrolein-amino compound. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
