Abstract

653,608. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Dec. 30,1948, No. 33515. [Class 122(v)] In a shaft seal in which an annular ring 3 is carried by and rotates with the shaft 1 and a non-rotatable ring 10 is supported by the shaft housing 2 and one of the rings, 10, is urged axially into rubbing contact with the other 3 and sealed to its support member 7 by a flexible bellows 8, a further sealing means, which co-operates with a member carried by one end of the bellows, is provided to prevent serious leakage in the event of the bellows 8 being punctured. An annulus of resilient material 12 is carried in a recess 13 in the outer peripheral edge of the ring 10 and makes sealing contact with the internal surface of a bore 14 in the housing 2. Alternatively, the annulus 12 may be carried by the housing and contact the outer peripheral edge of the ring 10. In a modification one end of the flexible bellows is anchored to the .shaft by means of a plate and the bellows rotates therewith and carries at its free end an axially movable ring making rubbing contact with a fixed ring attached to the shaft housing, the further sealing means being provided between the outer periphery of the plate or a member carried thereby and the inner periphery of a cylin- .drical extension secured to the axially movable ring.
