Abstract

1380331 End face shaft seals SOC INTERNATIONALE DE MACANIQUE INDUSTRIELLE SA 20 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 18377/72 Heading F2B In an end face seal for a rotary shaft 3 comprising a sealing ring 7 carried by a resilient diaphragm 6 and urged by a spring 5 into facial sealing contact with a resiliently-mounted counter ring 8, co-operating flange means are provided to retain the rings in contact with each other prior to the assembly of the seal in its operative condition on the shaft. In Fig. 1, the ring 8 is sealed to the shaft casing I by a rim 9 of resilient material secured to a case 16 having a flange 17 and the diaphragm 6 is secured at its inner periphery to the shaft 3 and reinforced by a metal sleeve 4 having a flange 18 which, in the operative condition in the upper part of the figure, is clear of the flange 17 but, as shown in the lower part of the figure contacts the flange 17 to prevent separation of the sealing and counter rings in the free condition of the seal. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, in which the counter ring 8 rotates with the shaft and the sealing ring 7 is non-rotatable, separation is prevented, in the free state of the seal, by flange portion 25 on an element 23 engaging flange portions 27 or a casing 26. If desired, the parts may be separated in the free state by moving the flange portions 25, 27 out of alignment with each other.
