Abstract
1,131,879. Shaft seals. GEORGE ANGUS & CO. Ltd. 27 Sept., 1967 [6 July, 1966], No. 30331/66. Heading F2B. A shaft seal comprises a sealing ring 11 housed in a casing formed by a pair of opposed relatively rotatable L-section rings 5 and 8, the sealing ring being axially-slidably mounted on and sealed to one, 5, of the rings and urged axially by a garter spring 15, into sealing contact with a surface 17 on the other ring 8. The rings 5 and 8 are tightly fitted on the shaft 2 and in the shaft housing 1 respectively and lugs 13 on the ring 5 engage recesses in the ring 11 which is sealed to the ring 5 by an 0-ring 12. The garter spring 15 engages a frusto-conical surface 16 on the ring 17. The surface 17 is formed on a washer 18 cemented to the ring 8. The rings 5 and 8 are held together, as a unit prior to installation by lugs 19 on the wall 9 of ring 8 which overlap the radial wall 7 of ring 5, the latter wall being formed with corresponding notches 20 to permit assembly by axial insertion and partial rotation of ring 5. Alternatively, the whole of the rim of wall 9 may be rolled over as indicated by broken lines 21. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the garter spring is in the form of an elastomeric 0-ring (22) which also serves to seal the ring (11) to the ring (5) and the washer (18) is bonded to the ring (8) by a layer (24) of flexible material e.g. silicone rubber.
