Abstract
653,203. Stuffing-box packing. JENKINS, R. G. C. (Parsons, J. B.). Sept. 7, 1948, No. 23574. [Class 122(v)] [Also in Group XXIX] A valve-like device for packing the piston rod 13 of a piston-andcylinder comprises a resilient, e.g. rubber, washer 20 slidable on the piston rod and reresiliently pressed against the end of the cylinder, and, as the piston moves towards the washer, the fluid in the adjacent end of the cylinder forces up the washer and flows out to atmosphere, but on the return stroke, the suction created in the cylinder pulls the washer down on to the end of the latter to prevent the entry of air. As shown, the washer is pressed down by a felt pad 21 impregnated with lubricant.
