Abstract

24-Ketocholesterol and derivatives thereof are obtained by oxidizing by means of ozone, fucosterol, or an ester or ether thereof, or fucostadienone to produce a 24-ketosteroid of the general formul I or II <FORM:0652944/IV (b)/1> <FORM:0652944/IV (b)/2> in which R in I is, for example, OH, OAcyl, or OAlkyl. As solvent for the ozonide which is formed glacial acetic acid or carbon tetrachloride may be used. Detailed examples are given.
