Abstract
A compound of the general formula <FORM:0680733/IV (b)/1> where B is a hydroxyl group or an esterified hydroxyl group and A is an adduct bridge between the two carbon atoms designated as carbon atoms 5 and 8, said adduct bridge being the radical of an aliphatic 1,2-olefinic-1,2-dicarboxylic acid or of an ester or anhydride thereof. This compound is obtained by the steps of ozonizing in solution a dehydroergsteryl adduct having in the 17 position the side-chain <FORM:0680733/IV (b)/2> with 1.0 to 1.25 mols. of ozone per mol. of adduct, at a temperature between about - 80 DEG C. and +30 DEG C., decomposing the ozonide under reductive conditions and recovering the resulting C-22 aldehyde. As solvent, there may be used methylene chloride. The decomposition is conducted with zinc and glacial acetic acid medium.
