Abstract
Carbazole derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0620733/IV (b)/1> where R represents hydrogen or an acetyl, phenyl acetyl, propional, butyryl or isobutyryl radical are prepared by reacting carbazole and an ethylene halogenohydrin (preferably an ethylene chlorohydrin or bromohydrin) in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide such as sodium hydroxide and in the case where R is an acyl radical acylating the product with the appropriate acid anhydride. In examples: (1) carbazole reacts with ethylene chlorohydrin in acetone in the presence of sodium hydroxide to give N-(b -hydroxyethyl) carbazole; (2) the product of (1) is heated with acetic anhydride to give N-(b -acetoxyethyl) carbazole; and (3) the product of (1) is heated with n-butyric anhydride to give N-(b -n-butyroxyethyl) carbazole. The phenylacetate, propionate and isobutyrate of N-(b -hydroxyethyl) carbazole are prepared by analogous methods. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of acids and acid halides as acylating agents. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
