[Class 7(v)] [Also in Group XXIV] In an engine-starter drive a multi-disc slip-coupling comprises bronze discs 36 splined in an outer driving barrel 18 and having graphite-grease-filled holes 88 surrounded by depressions 94 (produced e.g. during punching) on the side where they frictionally engage the chrome-plated surface 82 of imperforate steel discs 34 splined on an inner driven member 30. In Fig. 6 two bronze driving discs 36 are interposed between each of the driven steel discs 34, the burrs 92 produced during punching the holes 88 being arranged on adjacent idle sides, which provides spacing for additional lubricant. With single interposed driving discs the burrs are removed and depressions 94 formed on both sides and these discs may also be used in pairs as in Fig. 6. The holes 88 are arranged in sets of three, cicumferentially spaced around the disc and at different radii to cover its entire width. Friction pressure is adjusted by an end-screw 44 acting through a spring 40. In the inertia- or direct-type starter drive shown, a flywheel 47, cranked by hand or power through a claw'59, bevel gearing 51, 49, an additional coupling-pack 56, barrel 18 and the operative gearing (as follows), drives an axially-movable starterdog 52 through a pinion 41, stepped countershaft pair 31, 29, and an internal ring-gear 27 fast to a driving sun 26 of a planet-train, the planets 22 of which mesh a permanently fixed reaction ring-gear 24 and are carried by the outer driving barrel 18 of the slip coupling, the inner driven member 30 of which is internally screwthreaded to engage a male-threaded member 46 splined in the starter-dog 52. The latter is axially advanced into engagement with the engine-dog through an inner rod 48 operated by a lever 63, or in the case of direct cranking, the dog may be advanced by the screwed member 46.
