Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 7 (v).] An electric starting-motor 1 provided with a flywheel 2 is connected through toothed gearing to a sleeve 5. When the motor and flywheel have been set in rotation, the sleeve 5 is coupled by a sliding clutch 8 to a screwthreaded sleeve 4, on which a threaded pinion 3 moves axially into mesh with a gear wheel on the engine shaft. The pinion is braked by a friction member 6 sliding in grooves 7 in the casing. The clutch 8 is actuated by a fork 9 from a rod 10, which is also connected to means for switching off the motor 1 when the clutch 8 is in engagement, so that the starting of the engine is effected by the momentum of the motor 1, flywheel 2, &c. In a modification, the pinion 3 drives a counter-shaft connected to the engine shaft through bevel gearing, and a generator is driven from the countershaft.
