Abstract
175,326. Delano, J. K. Sept. 16, 1920. Turning-gear.-An engine-starter comprises two coaxial shafts 25, 13 which are connected by reduction gearing and can be moved axially into driving engagement with the engine shaft 10 and driven by a handle K or by an electric or other motor M through gearing 36, 37. The shaft 25 is rotatable within a bearing sleeve 27 in the shaft 13 and the two shafts are connected through gearing 19, 20, 23, 24, the teeth of the pinions 20, 24 being long enough to allow for the axial movement of the shafts 25, 13. The axial movement is effected by means of a rod 45 and a lever 43 pivoted at 44 and provided with a spring 50 tending to disengage the starting-shaft. The rod 45 engages the lever 43 by means of a spring 49 and carries a contact 47 for closing the switch S of the electric motor M. The motor is carried by a housing 34, 35 secured to the wall 16 of the gear casing C. In a modification, Fig. 2, the lever 43 is omitted and the clutch 12 on the starting shaft is automatically engaged with the engine shaft by means of a spring pin 55 in the hub of the housing member 181 engaging a screw thread in the starting-shaft 131.
