Abstract

443,590. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Sept. 1, 1934, No. 25184. Convention date, Sept. 2, 1933. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter drive, a pinion 6 driven from the shaft 1 of the starting motor through a friction clutch 7 and a threaded connection is positively held in mesh with the engine gear 16 during cranking. As shown, the pinion 6 is slidably journalled on the shaft 1 and is rigidly connected to a barrel 9 having slots 11 engaged by tongues on the driven member 8 of the clutch. The member 7 of the clutch is threaded on a screwed sleeve 2 driven from the shaft 1 through a torsion spring 3. Longitudinal movement of the clutch member 7 is transmitted to the pinion through a spring 13 until the pinion is in mesh with the engine gear 16, and the clutch member 8 encounters a stop nut 17, when the clutch is forced into driving relation. The parts are retained in this position, until the engine starts, by a latch 19 pivoted at 21 to a flange on the clutch member 7 and brought by a spring 24 into engagement with a notch 23 in the screw shaft. When the engine starts, the latch is released by a lug 29 on a speed-responsive element 25 pivoted at 26 on the driven member 8 of the clutch. Sufficient play is allowed between the latch 19 and the notch 23 to allow the clutch to be temporarily relieved in case the load on the starting motor is relieved on the engine going over compression points or by an initial weak explosion in the engine cylinder.
