Abstract
326,862. Rogers, F. H., (Eclipse Machine Co.). Nov. 23, 1928. Driving-arrangements.- An engine starter for aeroplane or other engines is arranged in axial alignment with the engine crank shaft 40 and provided with a driving member 9 adapted to engage a yielding driven member 45 mounted on the crank shaft and connected thereto by a separate clutch, the member 9 being in axial alignment with the member 45 and adapted to rotate it after disconnection of the primary power source from the member 9. As shown in Fig. 1, the driving and driven members 9, 45 have clutch teeth 14, 47 and the driven member 45 is secured by a ring 46 to a rotatable barrel connected to an extension 41 of the crank shaft 40 through two sets of clutch plates 50, 51 and 56, 57. The plates 50, 51 are arranged to transmit a substantially constant torque, the plates 50 being splined in the barrel 42 and the plates 51 splined to tongues 52 on a nut 49 engaging a threaded sleeve 48 slidable on splines on the shaft extension 41. A spring 53 acts on the plates 50, 51 through a ring 54 and bears against an abutment plate 55 on the extension 41. The clutch plates 56, 57 transmit a variable torque, the plates 56 being splined in the barrel 42 and the plates 57 splined on tongues 58 on the nut 49. A heavy spring 60. interposed between the nut 49 and the plate 55 acts on the clutch plates 56, 57 and its pressure is relieved by the action of the nut 49 when the engine starts. A bevel gear 61 on the barrel 42 drives a bevel gear 62 on the shaft 63 of an electric generator, which is thus driven from the crank shaft 40 through only one set 50, 51 of clutch plates, transmitting a substantially constant torque. The driving clutch member 9 is splined on a shaft 8 and moved axially into engagement with the member 45 by a manually operated rod 11. The shaft 8 is in threaded engagement with a sleeve 17 driven by a hand. actuated shaft 22 through bevel gearing 21, 20. A flywheel 38 coaxial with the shaft 8 and sleeve 17 carries planet wheels 30 each having two sets of teeth in engagement respectively with a fixed internal gear 28 and with internal teeth 27 on a flange 26 on the sleeve 17. The flywheel is set in rotation by means of the shaft 22 and sleeve 17, and the clutch member 9 is then engaged with the member 45 by means of the rod 11.
