[Class 110(i)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXX] A warning or trip device operable by an endless belt slipping on its driving drum or pulley comprises a driven roller or pulley engaged by the belt and arranged to be rotated'thereby at a rate dependent upon the speed of movement of the belt, a rotatable member associated with the driven roller or pulley, means independent of the belt for driving the member in synchronism with the driven roller when the belt is moving without slip and means operable by relative movement between the driven roller and the member resulting from substantial 'slipping of the belt, for operating a warning device or a trip mechanism for stopping the driving drum or pulley. In the embodiment shown, a roller 1 engaged by a mine conveyer belt is rotatably supported by bearings 2 on a spindle 3 which is supported by bearings 6 and provided with a sprocket 7 rotated by a chain drive from the driving mechanism of the conveyer so as to rotate at the same rate as the roller 1 when the belt is running without slip. The interior of the roller is connected by pipes 11, 12 in the spindle and by passages 11b, 16, with an oil reservoir 15 and a cylinder 17 containing an operating plunger 18 for a mercury switch 21 controlling the conveyer drive mechanism. When substantial slip of the belt on its driving drum occurs, the roller 1 rotates at a slower speed than the spindle whereby a screw 10 on the spindle develops pressure in the oil within the roller 1 and this is transmitted through the pipe 16 to the cylinder 17 so as to raise the plunger 18 against its spring 18a and operate the switch 21. A needle valve 19 permits a slight now of oil back to the reservoir 15 to prevent pressure building-up in the cylinder 17 and thus allowing a moderate amount of belt slip without operation of the switch. The switch 21 may control an audible or visible warning device in addition or as an alternative to the operation of the means for stopping the conveyer.
