Abstract

Composite metal oxide gel-type catalysts are obtained by first preparing an aqueous solution of soluble metallic salts corresponding to the metal oxides of the composite catalyst, then precipitating the metals as hydroxides in the presence of ammonium nitrate at 50-100 DEG F. by the addition of aqueous alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide in an amount sufficient to bring the pH of the mixture to within 5.2-8.5 and finally drying and calcining the unwashed precipitate to form the oxides. Addition of the hydroxide solution is preferably effected rapidly and batch-wise. Specified water-soluble salts are nitrates, acetates, chlorides and sulphates and the composites are those of the oxides of aluminium, chromium, beryllium, zirconium, vanadium, molybdenum and tungsten with one another. The catalysts are employed in the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons.
