Abstract

A process for the catalytic hydrogenation of streptomycin to dihydrostreptomycin comprises subjecting to catalytic hydrogenation a salt of streptomycin employing as catalyst a nickel or cobalt boride or a mixture thereof, as such, or in intimate association with a promoter metal, e.g. iron, molybdenum, tungsten or chromium. It is preferred to use water-soluble salts of streptomycin such as the hydrochloride, sulphate or calcium chloride complex. The salts may be dissolved in water or organic solvents such as methanol and ethanol. Preferred operating conditions are salt concentration 20 to 30 per cent., catalyst 5 to 15 per cent. of streptomycin salt, temperature 50-100 DEG C. and especially 75 DEG C., hydrogenation pressure 10 to 150 kg. per sq. cm. Specifications 642,249, 700,396 and 700,397 are referred to.
