Abstract
An alkalized foraminate catalyst suitable for hydration, hydrogenation or hydrogenolysis is prepared by treating an alloy containing aluminium and a catalytically active metal such as copper, nickel, cobalt or iron at a temperature up to 100 DEG C. with an aqueous solution of caustic alkali, preferably of 0.5-10 per cent strength by weight, at an uninterrupted space velocity greater than 10 and preferably between 20 and 30 to remove a portion of the aluminium from the surface, and providing the presence of free alkali in the catalyst prior to use. The latter may be effected either by omitting washing after the preliminary treatment or by washing and subsequent impregnation with an alkali, preferably barium hydroxide. Examples relate to foraminate catalysts impregnated with caustic soda, caustic potash, barium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide solutions respectively.
