Abstract
An oxidation catalyst containing the oxides of phosphorus and molybdenum in combination or otherwise on silica gel is prepared by contacting hydrated silica gel with an aqueous solution containing phosphate and molybdate ions and drying. The aqueous solution may contain phosphoric and molybdic acids or phosphoric acid ammonium molybdate. The hydrated silica gel may be prepared by precipitation from alkali silicate solution, the precipitate then being washed with water. The catalyst may be pelleted or ground to a powder for fluidized operations and is suitable for the oxidation of n, butene or butadiene to maleic acid.
