Abstract

A dehydrogenation catalyst comprises at least one catalytically active metallic oxide on a fused zirconia carrier. The carrier, in the form of lumps or granules, is preferably pretreated with an aqueous alkali, e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium hydroxide. A paste of the metallic oxide may be applied to the carrier by tumbling in a ballmill. Specified metallic oxides are those of zinc, magnesium, copper, beryllium and chromium to which promoters such as the oxides of bismuth, antimony, zirconium, thorium, cerium and vanadium may be added. The catalyst is particularly suitable for the dehydrogenation of secondary aliphatic alcohols to ketones.
