Abstract
Alcohols are formed by the hydration of olefines in the presence of a catalyst prepared by pelleting under a pressure of 50-60 tons per sq. in. a mixture of tungstic acid (anhydrous or hydrated WO3) and 0.01-10 per cent. of alumina, titania, uranium oxide, thorium oxide, indium sesquioxide, or tellurium dioxide (see Group III). Reference is made to the hydration of propylene to isopropanol. Specifications 405,282, 622,937, 650,475, [Group III], and 665,214 are referred to.ALSO:Catalyst of improved mechanical strength, suitable for the hydration of olefines to alcohols, is prepared by pelleting under a pressure of 50-60 tons per sq. in. a mixture of tungstic acid (anhydrous or hydrated WO3) and 0.01 - 10 (preferably 5-10) per cent. of alumina, titania, uranium oxide, thorium oxide, indium sesquioxide, or tellurium dioxide. Powdered tungstic acid may be mixed with a solution of the nitrate of the other metal, and the mixture dried, heated, and pelleted. The pellets may be reduced to form blue oxide of tungsten. An example describes the preparation from tungstic acid and aluminium nitrate of a catalyst containing 5.5 per cent. Al2O3 using graphite as a pelleting lubricant; alternatively tungstic acid may be mixed with precipitated and washed alumina gel. Reference is made to the hydration of propylene to isopropanol. Specifications 405,282, 622,937, 650,475, and 665,214 are referred to.
