[Class 120(i)] A machine for opening textile fibrous materials, of the type in which a sheet of fibres is fed by suitable feed mechanism to a saw-toothed taker-in type beater, comprises a stripping beater 6 rotating at a higher peripheral speed than, and in the opposite direction to, the taker-in beater 5, and carrying on its periphery a series of flexible flaps 8 extending radially therefrom and operating to exercise a fanning effect to remove fibres from the teeth of beater 5. As shown, the tips of the flaps 8, which may consist of strips of leather or indiarubber sheet, make brushing contact with the tips of the teeth of beater 5; strips of wire-covered fillet material may be interposed on beater 6 between the flaps. Beaters 5 and 6 are enclosed in a common casing 7 to which air is admitted through an adjustable inlet 10; casing 7 is also furnished, opposite the ends of beaters 6, with further adjustable inlets which admit air to the hollow interior of beater 6 whence it is discharged radially between the strips or flaps to assist in stripping the teeth of beater 5. The fibres stripped from beater 5 are carried by the air current to condenser cages 13, 14. For treating dirty material, e.g. cotton, more knives or grid bars may be associated with either or both of beaters 5, 6. Specification 292,472, [Class 120(i)], is referred to.
