Abstract
649,436. Seed-sowers. STEYN, J. J. DE V. Nov. 23, 1948, No. 30449. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1947. [Class 6(i)] A seed-sower comprises an endless apertured belt 21 travelling upwardly over the inclined base of a seed trough 30, the driving pulley 20 of the belt being keyed to the axle 5 of a furrow-closing wheel 7, and the tension in the belt being variable to complete or interrupt the drive automatically upon the lowering or raising of a furrow-opening shoe 2. The front of the machine is mounted on a wheeled forecarriage provided with a drawbar 14. The fore-carriage is supported on wheels 9, the axle 10 of which has fixed to it a forwardly projecting lever 11 and a rearward tongue 12 secured to an axle 8 on the frame 1 of the seed-sower. A lever 28, also secured to the axle 8, is joined by a cable 28a to a spring-loaded, pivoted, bell-crank 26 carrying a jockey pulley 25 bearing on the belt 21. On depressing the lever 11, the front of the frame 1 is raised and the belt 21 is slackened, thus interrupting the drive. In a modification, the upper belt pulley 22 is pivotally mounted and is connected to the lever 28, the jockey pulley 25 then being omitted. The seed trough 30 is supplied with seeds from a hopper 34 through a tube 35, and has mounted within it a brush 33 to sweep excess seeds from the belt. Different belts with various sizes and spacing of apertures may be used.
