648,085. Rotary kilns. EVERY, C. E. (Smidth & Co., Aktieselskab, F. L.). Nov. 18, 1948, No. 30040 [Classes 51(i) and 51(ii)] A rotary kiln 1 for the burning of cement, lime &c. extends into a stationary discharge casing 2 into which projects the burner 8 of a removable refractory-lined cylindrical combustion chamber 5 supplied tangentially with pulverized fuel and air through a pipe 6 and provided with an offtake 7 for molten ash and slag. Combustion is completed at the burner 8 around which circulates secondary air, and the primary air may be drawn from the kiln itself or the cooler 4. Solidified ash &c. may be ground up and incorporated with the batch material. A modification shows the invention applied to a rotary kiln with planetary coolers, air from the kiln passing through a fuel pulverizer from which a fan delivers the fuel/air mixture to a removable combustion chamber and in another modification the discharge casing and combustion chamber form a single movable unit.
