Abstract
1,147,241. Rotary furnaces. GIULINI G.m.b.H., GEB. 3 Jan., 1967 [1 Feb., 1966] No. 325/67. Heading F4B. A rotary furnace for the reduction of iron oxide-containing muds, e.g. red mud, with a solid C-containing substance has a combustion chamber 10 fired by an end burner 11, spaced nozzles with cranked ends turned upstream of the furnace, and a burner 6 downstream of a drying zone 5 incorporating suspended chairs. The nozzles are supported with air from fans 7, 8 and 9, and with steam and/or flue gases or with a liquid from a pipe 13. The mixed mud and carbonaceous material fed to the furnace as a slurry from container 1 by pump 2 and line 3 produces on drying a solid granulate with grain size 3-20 mm. A typical mixture is 192.5 parts red mud containing 48% water and 50% Fe 2 O 3 (estimated dry), 25 parts of ground coke breeze and 20 parts of limestone. The nozzles supply 1-5 parts air mixed with 1 part steam.
