Abstract
642,200. Induction furnaces. BIRLEC, Ltd. Feb. 28, 1948, No. 6253. Convention date, Dec. 5, 1945. [Class 39(iii)] In a stationary submerged resistor type furnace for melting metal having a hearth 2 connected to two or more inductor units each with metal-containing passages 7, 8 forming a secondary loop threaded by a primary consisting of coil 10 wound on a laminated iron core 9 and surrounded by refractory material 11, an internal refractory wall 15 is provided on the hearth between the inductor units 4a, 4b so that if one unit is emptied of metal prior to removal, the other section and the hearth above it remain charged with molten metal to the level of the top 16 of the wall 15. Each inductor unit has a removable plug 12 with a clay filling 13 for emptying the molten metal. The hearth 2 and the units comprise refractory lined casings, and the units are detached by loosening bolts 14a connecting them to the hearths. Gaps 20 between the hearth and the units are filled with refractory cement. The passages 7, 8 of the secondary loop are straight. One inductor unit thus remains in use while the other is replaced. Specifications 571,304, 575,780, 599,439 and 642,199 are referred to.
