Abstract
527,400. Electric induction furnaces. AJAX ELECTRIC FURNACE CORPORATION. April 11, 1939, No. 10987. Convention date, April 12, 1938. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XII] In an electric induction furnace for refining metals, particularly steel, of the type having a melting chamber with a depending loop 10 threaded by a transformer iron core 8 with a primary winding 9, the refractory lining forming the hearth is maintained under compression over substantially its whole area by metallic shell sections resiliently clamped together. Fig. 2 shows such a furnace enclosed in a composite casing interconnected by expansion joints formed of spring-loaded bolts 19. Insert plates 22 within the shell surrounding the lower part of the melting chamber are pressed against the lining by springs 23 adjustable by bolts 24 in the shell. The shell 3 encasing the refractory surrounding the upper part of the loop 10 tapers inwardly upwardly to resist upward expansion of the refractory and with the shell 4 has insert plates 25 resiliently clamped against the sides and back of the lining by springs within the shell acted on by bolts 24, the front of the shells 3, 4 being, however, rigidly held against forward expansion. During lining of the furnace the expansion joints are replaced by rigidly connected joints. Hydraulic pistons 7 tilt the furnace.
