Abstract

One molecular proportion of a non-conjugated olefinic hydrocarbon having the formula RR1C=CH2, where R and R1 are each aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals and at least three molecular proportions of a halomethane of the type X-C-hal3, where X is hydrogen or halogen and hal represents halogen, are maintained in presence of free trihalomethyl radicals generated either by actinic light or an organic peroxide, whereby a mixture containing predominantly a 1 : 1 molecular addition product consisting of a single divalent hydrocarbon radical containing at least three acyclic carbon atoms joined together to which radical is attached a single C-hal3 radical and a hydrogen or halogen atom. Peroxides specified are benzoyl, acetyl, propionyl, lauryl or oleyl peroxides, and tertiary butyl hydroperoxide or ascaridol. Alternatively, the peroxide may be formed in situ, e.g. from sodium peroxide and an acid anhydride. In examples: (1) isobutylene is reacted with carbon tetrachloride or chloroform in presence of benzoyl peroxide; (2) dimethallyl is reacted with carbon tetrachloride in presence of benzoyl peroxide; (3) carbon tetrachloride and isobutylene are reacted under actinic light. Specification 581,899, [Group IV], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the reaction of olefinic compounds having the grouping <FORM:0638414/IV (b)/1> , and has examples describing the reaction of carbon tetrachloride in presence of benzoyl peroxide with (1) butene-1, (2) propylene, (3) octadecene-1, (4) octene-1, (5) dodecene-1, (6) allyl acetate, (7) allyl formate, (8) allyl propionate, (9) undecylenic acid, (10) allyl chloride, (11) methallyl acetate, (12) dimethallyl ether, (13) methallyl ethyl ether. It also refers to the use of metal alkyls to generate trihalomethyl radicals. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
