Abstract

"Olefin sulphonates" are prepared by reacting olefins having terminal double bonds and 8-22 carbon atoms with 1 to 1.7 moles per mole of olefin of gaseous SO3 in an inert diluent gas, at 20-100 DEG C., and bleaching the product, before, during, or after hydrolysis, with hydrogen peroxide or an alkali metal chlorite or hypochlorite, or materials forming these under the bleaching conditions. The sulphonating gas may contain 1-20% of SO3. The hydrolysis may be acid-usually achieved merely by adding water-or alkaline, when alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates, may be added, or amine bases may be used. The hydrogen peroxide may amount to 0.5-10% of the sulphonate weight, and other bleaching agents are used in equivalent quantities, the bleaching preferably occurring at 20-100 DEG C. The preferred bleaching conditions are pH 6-8, and 40-50 DEG C., using an alkali metal hypochlorite, after an alkaline hydrolysis.
