[Class 20 (iii)] In a sliding window, especially for ships, comprising a counterbalanced sheet of glass adapted to be raised or lowered directly by hand in a frame fixed in the window opening, the combined weight of the glass and counterbalancing means is utilized to effect, automatically, the watertight sealing of the glass, after movement thereof, against the frame. In the form shown, each side of a metal frame 1, secured in an opening in a ship's plating, carries two pivoting links 5, 5x, which carry at their outer ends vertical housings 7. A pair of racks 9, 10, in opposed engagement with a pinion 11, are located in each housing 7, a sheet of glass 14 being secured to the racks 9, 9, its weight being counterbalanced by a weight 10a bolted to the lower ends of racks 10, 10. The lower links 5x each have a quadrant 5c which engages with a pinion 16 located one at each end of a shaft 17. This shaft can be turned by a handle 23 operating through gears 20 and 21. Operation of the handle 23 pivots the glass and the counter balancing mechanism away from its position in sealing contact with the rubber or like strip 24 around the frame and the glass may then be raised or lowered by hand. After such adjustment the handle is released and returns to its original position, the weight of the glass and counterbalancing device serving automatically to lock the glass in the new position and seal it against the said strip.
