Abstract

632,826. Garment sleeves. BERMAN, W. W. June 16, 1947, No. 15831. Convention date, Feb. 24. [Class 141] The top edge of a sleeve has its upper part secured directly to the shoulder portion of the garment and the remainder joined to the garment by means of an expansion pleat comprising upper and lower overlying arcuate members which are tapered in width towards their extremities and are secured together along their convex edges, and are secured along their concave edges, one to the armhole and the other to the sleeve edge, elastic means being provided in line with the vertical diameter of the armseye for connecting the pleat to the garment. As shown, the sleeve 12 is sewn to the shoulder yoke 11 along the line 16. The arcuate members forming the expansion pleat 17 are each formed of two pieces 18, 19 and 20, 21 joined together at their wider ends to form seams 26, 27 which are in line with the armhole diameter D, the sleeve seam 13 and the side seam 14 of the garment. An elastic tape 30, secured to the bottom edge of the seams 26, 27 and to the side seam 14 holds the pleat 17 in position. In an alternative construction, the arcuate members forming the pleat are each formed of a single piece of material which is reinforced by a tape or by folding the material on itself to replace the seams 26, 27.
