Abstract
630,476. Locking means for X-ray apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CALDWELL, J. T. Dec. 1, 1947, No. 31704. [Class 98 (i)] In a device of the kind in which an object is supported in an adjustable position by holding means movable relative to a supporting member or members movable relative to a base whereon the device is located, a locking means is provided which moves with the supporting mem - ber'or members and includes in combination a flexible member fixed at one end to the supporting member or members and connected at the other end to means which lock the supporting member or members to the base when flexion, or increased flexion, is applied to the flexible member to bring the ends thereof closer together, the flexible member having a length not less than the distance of travel of the holding means, and clamping means comprising two co-operating jaws, one fixed relative to the holding means and one movable relative thereto, engageable with any part of the flexible member to fix the clamping means relative to the fixed end and to flex the flexible member to lock the supporting member or members to the base. As shown, a support for an X-ray tube slides vertically on columns 1 mounted on a foot 3 travelling on base rails. A flexible metal ribbon 9 is fastened at one end to a cross-piece 2 at the end of columns 1, and extends through the foot and is connected to a lever 11 pivoted to the foot. A plate 14 on the tube support has a fixed clamping member 15 against which a part of the ribbon 9 is pressed by a member 16 of complementary shape, urged toward member 15 by an eccentric cam 17. The member 15 has a surface providing high friction, and is so shaped that the ribbon first contacts a part thereof, and is then flexed by the action of member 16, the ribbon being finally held between members 15, 16. At the same time the lever 11 is raised against the action of a spring 10 so that a projection 12 thereon engages a rack 13 on the base on which the foot 3 moves.
