Abstract
629,830. Mercury switches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 28, 1947, No. 28718. Convention date, Nov. 1, 1946. [Class 38(v)] A mercury interrupter operating by vaporisation of the mercury is constructed so as to facilitate cooling and thereby produce a high operating- frequency, an insulating envelope 2 supports an in- .sulating sleeve 14. closed at the bottom by an apertured ceramic disc 16. A carbon disc 22 cemented therein separates the mercury in the sleeve 14 and envelope 2. The currentdensity at the aperture 18 is such that the mercury thereat is vaporised and the circuit between the .electrodes 4, ;12 broken. Cooling of the mercury is assisted by the mounting of the disc 22 in the centre of the envelope whereby the heat is conducted rapidly therefrom, and further heat is conducted away by a plate 6 of the electrode 4 which has the same area as, and is positioned near to, the lower surface of the disc 22.
