628,863. Reinforcing hollow sheet metal structural members. NUFFIELD METAL PRODUCTS, Ltd., and SPEED, E. March 29, 1947, No. 8571. [Class 20(ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXXII] A device for reinforcing a box-section or other hollow sheet metal structural member 5 assembled from component parts comprises a distance piece 1 of open-ended box-like form provided at one end with at least one flange-like attachment lug 3 which is spot-welded or rivetted to an internal face 4 of one of the component parts of the structural member before it is assembled. As shown in Fig. 1 in which the structural member may, for example, be a door pillar of a motor vehicle to which are to be secured door hinges or other load carrying members, the sheet metal distance piece 1 is formed from strip into an openended rectangular frame with rounded corners, the ends of the strip being joined by a spot-welded lap joint 2. After securing the distance pieces and assembly of the structural member, door hinges 6 are bolted or rivetted to it, the bolts 7 extending through the open ends of the associated distance piece 1 at its corners. In modifications Figs. 3, 4, 5 (not shown) sheet metal framework of various forms may be disposed inside the distance piece to serve as guiding and supporting means for the bolts or rivets. The body of the distance piece may also be formed in halves from a pair of channel-section members with outwardly directed flanges which are spot-welded together.
