Abstract
596,278. Metal framework joints. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and MORPHEW, L. R. July 26, 1945, No. 19132. [Class 20(ii)] [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIII] Relates to the joints of metal framework, particularly applicable to the chassis frames of vehicles and also to aircraft and buildings, and consists in forming the metal in the web of a channel-sectioned main or primary member where it is to be joined to a secondary member with a conformation consisting of lugs, flanged holes, bulges &c., the secondary member being of channel, angle or closed cross - section, uniform throughout, and mating at its end with the conformation in the primary member. The members are secured together by welding or riveting so that the load at the joint is taken in shear. Numerous applications of the invention are described and shown, examples of which are as follows. As shown in Fig. 1, the primary member 11, a chassis frame side member with the channel opening facing outwards, has an inwardly directed bulge 13, 14 formed in its web. The secondary member 12 is also of channel section, and its web mates at 15 with the surface 14 of the bulge in the primary member, the surfaces being spot-welded together. The flanges of the member 12 also embrace the flanges of the member 11, and are joined to them by spot-welding. In the example shown in Fig. 7, the web of the primary member 11 is apertured and a flange or lug 32 thereby formed, to which the web of the secondary member 12 is spot-welded, the flanges of the member 12 being in this case enveloped by those of the member 11 and spot welded thereto. Figs. 9 and 10 show a hole in the web of the primary member 11, with a flange 33 to which the web of the secondary member 12 is spot-welded. The flanges 36 of the secondary member are enveloped by the flanges 37 of the primary member and welded thereto. The conformations in the primary members may be suitable for different sections of secondary members, for example a circular flanged hole 43, Fig. 14, may be formed for a semicylindrical secondary member 12. Additional components such as plates may be incorporated e.g. Fig. 14 shows in edge view a top panel 46 welded to the flanges 45 of the secondary member 12 and to the upper flange of the primary member 11.
