Abstract

620,617. Lifting-dogs. ROADS, H. C. Jan. 23, 1947, No. 2139. [Class 78 (iv)] Apparatus for lifting sacks, bales or the like comprises a carrier for attachment to a hoisting rope or cable provided with a pair of horizontally-spaced blocks, a pair of jaw members pivoted together intermediately of their length and slidably supported by the blocks in such a way that the upper limb of the right-hand jaw member has contact with the left-hand block and the upper limb of the left-hand jaw member has contact with the right-hand block, the block-contacting surfaces of said jaw limbs being inclined to the vertical in upwardly diverging directions so that when the jaw members freely depend from the carrier, the upper limbs of the jaw members ride upon the blocks which constrain the jaw members to close, while when the carrier is lowered relative to the jaw members, the upper limbs of the jaw members separate to open the jaw members. In the embodiment shown, jaw members 10, 11, pivotally connected at 12, are slidably supported in a carrier 13 suspended by a shackle 20 from a hoisting cable. The carrier comprises a pair of plates 14 spaced apart by cylindrical blocks 15, 16 and a block 17 and secured together by bolts 18. The links 23, 24 of the jaw members normally rest against the blocks 15, 16 with a clearance between them and the block 17. When a .sack is to be lifted, the carrier is lowered so that the jaw members contact the sack and the block 17 engages these jaw members to assist their opening. The latter are now manipulated to engage the sack and the carrier pulled up by the hoisting rope whereby the jaw members will be closed by the blocks 15, 16 sliding along their limbs 23, 24.
