Abstract
995,264. Grab excavators. S. A. FONDEDILS (S.A.F.) S.p.A. Sept. 19, 1962, [Sept. 20, 1961], No. 35710/62. Heading E1F. [Also in Division B8] Associated with a grab bucket is means by which an impact force or forces can be applied to the jaws of the bucket to cause initial penetration of the digging edges on the jaws into material which is to be subsequently gathered into the grab bucket as the jaws thereof close together. The means for creating the forces may be gravity, fluid or electrically actuated. The gravity actuated means shown comprises a heavy weight 21 secured to the hoist rope of the bucket and having a limited sliding movement within a frame 10 to which the bucket jaws are pivotally connected through links 12. The jaws are also pivoted at 16 to a block 17, that when the hoist rope 25 is wound in, is raised in the frame 10 by a chain 20 by which the block 17 is attached to the weight 21. If no tension is exerted on the chain the block 17 moves to the lowest possible position as determined by abutments in the frame to cause the jaws to open. Removal of tension on the cable 25 allows the weight to fall and strike abutments 23 in the frame 10 through which a blow is thus transmitted to the digging edges 15 of the jaws. To allow of opening of the jaws 14 to allow of discharge of the contents of the bucket the frame is at the desired discharge point held in space whilst the rope 25 is slackened.
