Abstract

616,948. Hydraulic machines. DUNNING, L. T. Sept. 25, 1946, No. 28606. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a hydraulic valve gear, for fluid pressure engines (see Group XXVI), the valves are operated by ram and cylinder units. Each unit comprises a fixed ram 92 having a chamber 95 adapted to receive liquid under pressure, a reciprocating cylinder 94 engaging the stem of the valve and a main valve 96 having mounted therein a pilot valve 97. When the engine valve is closed, valves 96 and 97 are open such that liquid under pressure admitted to the chamber 95 passes through the pilot valve 97, provided with a grooved stem 109 and moves the cylinder 94 upwards, thereby allowing both valves to move upwards, under the action of their retaining springs 112 and 113, such that a collar 103 on the end of the main valve 96 is moved clear of a counterbore 99, within the ram 92, to allow the liquid to pass through a longitudinal grooved passage 98 thereby increasing the speed of the cylinder 94 until the head 102 of the valve 96 engages its seat 101, after which liquid flows only through the pilot valve 97, thereby damping the speed of the cylinder 94 until the head 105 of the valve 97 engages its seat 106. A similar operation takes place when the liquid is exhausted during the closing of the engine valve under spring pressure.
