Combined fluid-actuated and mechanical gears. - A weighted piston is reciprocated alternately from one side to the other of an aircraft with a view to obtaining a soaring action. Fig. 3 shows the weight in the form of a piston 20 reciprocated in a cylinder 19 arranged across the machine, by means of compressed air supplied from a reservoir by a pipe 23 and distributed by piston valves 41, 45, the valves 45 being provided one at each end of the cylinder and formed with tappets 46 operated by the piston 20 at the ends of its strokes. A hand-cock 55, when in the position shown, connects the air supply to opposite sides of the piston 20 by pipes 50, 51, so that the piston is stationary. When the cock is rotated 90‹ to bring the pipe 23 into communication with a passage 28 and port 30, air flows to one side of the piston by a pipe 33 or 36, the other side being exhausted by ports 52 and 42 or 43. The piston thereupon moves and, at the end of its stroke, opens the tappet valve 45 at that end to admit air by pipes 47 and 38 or 39 to one end of the valve 41, which is thus moved so as to reverse the conditions on opposite sides of the piston for the return stroke.
